FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
Questions are answered plainly here, from first visits and appointments to treatment planning, so you know what to expect.
Whitening
Most patients enjoy their result for 6-12 months. Coffee, tea, wine and smoking may stain teeth. An at-home top-up kit keeps things bright in between visits.
Professional whitening, done at the right concentration and at the right pace, is safe for enamel. We review your teeth first to make sure it's the right treatment for you.
Maybe, but sensitivity needs checking first. We look for decay, gum recession, cracks or worn enamel, then discuss whether whitening should be delayed, adjusted or avoided.
Whitening changes natural tooth shade, but crowns, fillings and veneers usually do not lighten the same way. If visible restorations are present, we discuss shade expectations before whitening.
Often, whitening is planned before a new clear retainer so the retainer fits the final tooth position and shade plan. We first check sensitivity risk, gum health and whether whitening is suitable.
Often yes. We first check that your retainer still fits well and that your teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening. If needed, we sequence whitening and retainer updates so your smile stays stable.
Veneers
Veneers are thin shells placed on the front of your teeth to improve their colour, shape, size, and overall appearance for a natural-looking smile.
It depends on your smile goals.
Some patients choose 2-4 veneers to improve their front teeth, while others choose 6-10 veneers for a full smile makeover. During your consultation, the dentist will recommend the number that best suits your smile.
Composite Veneers
- Completed in one visit in most cases.
- More affordable.
- Easy to repair if chipped.
- May stain over time.
Porcelain Veneers
- Stronger and more stain-resistant.
- More natural-looking.
- Last longer with proper care.
- Usually require two or more visits.
Our dentist will recommend the most suitable option based on your needs and expectations.
Crowning
A filling is suitable when only a small portion of the tooth is damaged. If a tooth has a large cavity, has undergone root canal treatment, or has a crack, a crown provides full coverage and helps strengthen the remaining tooth structure. During your consultation, we will assess your tooth and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
A same day or next day crown is a dental crown that is designed, made, and fitted much faster than a traditional crown.
- Same Day Crown: Your crown is completed and cemented on the same day.
- Next Day Crown: Your tooth is prepared on the first day, and your permanent crown is fitted the next day.
This means less waiting time, less travelling time, and you can get back to eating and smiling sooner.
We offer full porcelain (lithium disilicate) and zirconia.
The procedure is usually not painful because the tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia.
A dental crown may be recommended when a tooth:
- Has a large filling and not enough healthy tooth structure remaining.
- Is cracked, fractured, or badly worn down.
- Has undergone root canal treatment and needs extra protection.
- Is severely broken or weakened.
- Is discoloured or misshapen and needs an aesthetic improvement.
A crown helps to protect, and restore the tooth so you can chew comfortably while maintaining a natural-looking smile. The dentist will examine your tooth and recommend whether a crown is the best treatment for your situation.
Both materials have their advantages, and the best choice depends on your needs. Zirconia is extremely strong and durable, while porcelain or lithium disilicate crowns are highly aesthetic with excellent translucency.
At Aloha Dental, we recommend the most suitable crown material based on the tooth's location, your bite, and your aesthetic expectations.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a well-made crown can typically last more than 5 years. Its lifespan depends on factors such as oral hygiene, bite forces, teeth grinding, and routine dental maintenance.
Yes. Once your permanent crown is cemented, you can generally eat as normal. We recommend avoiding very hard foods such as ice or hard sweets, and not using your teeth to open packaging, as these habits can damage both natural teeth and crowns.
Some crowns may be planned for same or next day timing, while others need staged visits. Timing depends on tooth condition, materials, equipment or lab availability, and the appointment schedule.
Back teeth often need crown protection after root canal treatment because they handle heavy chewing forces. Front teeth and smaller cases may differ, so the dentist checks how much tooth remains before advising.
A crown is planned for shade, shape, bite and gum position so it blends with nearby teeth as much as possible. We discuss expectations before treatment, especially for front teeth or visible smile areas.
Early Bite Correction
Early bite correction and jaw guidance is a treatment for growing children that helps guide the development of the teeth and jaws while they are still growing.
The goal is to correct bite problems early, create enough space for permanent teeth, and encourage healthy jaw development, which may reduce the need for more complex treatment later.
Yes. Myobrace is a preventive orthodontic system that helps correct poor oral habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and incorrect swallowing, while guiding proper jaw and dental development. Myobrace should always be used alongside myofunctional therapy for the best results.
Not every child is suitable for Myobrace, so our dentist will perform a thorough assessment before recommending the most appropriate treatment.
Early correction can help:
- Guide proper jaw growth.
- Create space for incoming permanent teeth.
- Correct bite problems before they become more severe.
- Reduce the risk of impacted or crowded teeth.
- Improve facial development.
- Address harmful habits such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing.
- Potentially reduce the need for tooth extractions or complex braces treatment later.
The ideal time for an assessment is usually around 6-10 years old, when the first permanent teeth have started to erupt.
It depends on your child's growth and the severity of the original problem.
Early correction reduces the severity of the dental condition. Some children may still need braces during their teenage years to achieve the best final alignment, while others may only require minimal treatment.
Many parents ask when adult front teeth and first molars are coming in, often around ages 6 to 11. The right timing depends on your child's teeth, habits, jaw growth and bite pattern.
Crowding, crossbite, open bite, deep bite, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, tongue habits or uneven jaw growth are common reasons to check early. Not every child needs treatment, but early assessment gives a clearer timeline.
Not always. Early guidance may simplify later orthodontic treatment for suitable children, but some children still need braces or aligners when more adult teeth are present.
We check tooth eruption, jaw growth, bite, facial balance, oral habits and breathing-related clues. The plan may be monitoring, exercises, appliances, orthodontic timing advice or referral if specialist care is better.
Aligners
Yes. Aloha Dental provides clear aligners in Johor Bahru for suitable cases. We assess your bite, explain the expected movement and discuss whether aligners or braces fit your goals better.
Suitability depends on your crowding or spacing, bite, gum health, tooth shape and whether you can wear the trays consistently. A consultation helps confirm whether clear aligners, braces or another plan is safer for your case.
Clear aligners are more discreet and removable, while braces may be better for some bite movements or complex cases. The better option depends on your bite, treatment goals, habits and review schedule.
Treatment length varies by how much movement is needed and how consistently the trays are worn. After checking your teeth and bite, we can give a more realistic timeline and explain whether refinements may be needed.
Yes. Retainers are normally needed after aligners or braces because teeth can drift after movement. We explain the retainer type, wear schedule and when to review or replace it.
A retainer may need replacement if it cracks, feels loose, no longer seats fully, smells despite cleaning or your teeth have shifted. Bring your current retainer so we can check the fit before making a new one.
Teeth can drift after braces or aligners if retainers are not worn as advised. If your retainer feels tight or no longer fits, book a check before forcing it into place.
Dental Implants
From first consultation to final crown, plan for three to six months. Most of that time is healing. Active appointments and chairside time are fewer than most of the people expect.
Yes. Dental implants in Johor Bahru are available after assessment of your bone, gum health, bite and medical history. We explain the timeline and alternatives before treatment starts.
Dental implant suitability depends on bone volume, gum health, bite forces, medical history, smoking habits and the condition of nearby teeth. An assessment is needed before comparing implants with bridges or dentures.
Implant treatment is usually staged because the implant area needs planning, placement, healing and crown fitting. The exact timeline depends on bone condition, healing, grafting needs and the final tooth design.
Each option solves missing teeth differently. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth, bridges may be useful when adjacent teeth also need crowns, and dentures may suit wider gaps or budget needs. We compare them after checking your mouth.
Not every implant case needs a bone graft. If the bone is too thin or has changed after tooth loss, grafting or another staged plan may be discussed before placing an implant.
Children
We keep first visits short and child-led. A ride in the chair, a mirror count of their teeth, a gentle clean. The parent stays in the room. No pressure to do more.
